The fifteenth season of Diablo 4, called Season of Hell's Legacy, will launch as part of the series’ 30th anniversary and centers on its own seasonal storyline. The update’s headline feature is a nostalgic surprise that explicitly references the original Diablo from 1996.
At BlizzCon 2026 the franchise’s past and future each received significant attention. The Diablo 4 segment leaned heavily on memories of Diablo 1 and Diablo 2 (with some nods to Diablo 3), while separate portions of the presentation looked ahead to Diablo 5. The panel is available here:
Owen Leech, lead of seasonal content, revealed a new activity called Waking Nightmares, which recreates pivotal moments from earlier entries in the franchise using Diablo 4’s art and gameplay. There will be three distinct categories of these dungeon “memories.”
A highlighted subtype is Prime Evil Waking Nightmares, which retell sections that lead up to clashes with the Prime Evils—remakes of the final campaign encounters with Baal, Mephisto, and Diablo. These dungeons are woven into the seasonal narrative, culminating in an encounter with the Lord of Terror.
Owen Leech, lead of seasonal content: The last one, and the one I’m most looking forward to, actually recreates almost the entire Diablo 1, so you start in the Tristram Cathedral, make your way to the catacombs, descend into the caves, and then, of course, into hell itself to finish off the Big Red One, the Dark Lord, the Lord of Terror, Diablo.
Leech explained that the route mirrors the structure of the 1996 original, which sent players down through sixteen dungeon levels. Each block in that descent had its own visual identity and enemy roster, ranging from cathedral halls to the fiery depths of the underworld—elements being evoked in these new Diablo 4 dungeons.
The season announcement came alongside a company update that Blizzard will no longer produce large expansions for Diablo 4, reallocating development resources toward Diablo 5. The choice prompted mixed reactions from the community, but the scope of Season of Hell's Legacy indicates continued content support for Diablo 4.
Blizzard also confirmed additional future plans: an Amazon class will be added in 2027, Diablo 5 is slated for release in 2029, and Diablo 4 will receive a final boss that has been anticipated since the game’s launch.
