Matthew McConaughey Admitted That His Role in "Interstellar" Helped Him Understand the Main Idea of Exodus

One striking element of the sci‑fi RPG Exodus is Matthew McConaughey in the enigmatic role of Orlev. Archetype Entertainment says his involvement wasn’t just a cameo or a name on the poster; the actor connected with the project's core themes in a way the studio found meaningful.

The central mechanic revolves around time dilation: players set out on prolonged expeditions and, when they come back, decades (e.g., years or even longer) may have elapsed at home. That setup inevitably brings Interstellar to mind — McConaughey’s film role dealt with similar temporal fallout — and the team admits the comparison is on their radar.

According to game director Chris King, the team was indeed inspired by such sci‑fi ideas but aimed to create their own interpretation:

"Interstellar is the most famous example of using time dilation in popular culture, but we tried to look at this concept in our own way."

Archetype Entertainment’s general manager Chad Robertson noted that McConaughey immediately understood why the developers wanted to involve him in the project.

"When we first spoke with Matthew about the role, he immediately understood why we were interested in collaborating with him. This connection felt very natural and helped to better reveal the main idea of the game."

In practice, Exodus ties the time‑skewing effects to player agency. Choices made on an expedition can ripple forward so that, upon return, familiar faces and the setting itself have shifted — not as a quick cut or a single quest consequence, but after years, i.e., decades, of change. Screenwriter Drew Karpyshyn has framed it as decisions carrying long tails rather than instant results.

The studio argues this will weight decisions differently than many current RPGs, where outcomes are often contained within one narrative thread. Whether those ambitions translate into satisfying gameplay is another question — fans and critics will see once players can test it for themselves.

Exodus is scheduled for release in early 2027 for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S.
