State of Decay 3 returns after a long silence: new atmospheric trailer, release in 2027, and launch on PS5
After several years of scarce news and prolonged waiting, State of Decay 3 has finally reminded us of itself. At the Xbox Games Showcase, Undead Labs presented a new trailer for the game, confirmed the release window, and officially announced the project’s launch not only on Xbox and PC but also on PlayStation 5.
According to the announcement, State of Decay 3 will release in 2027 on Xbox Series X|S, PS5, and PC. This is an important step for the series: a franchise long associated with the Xbox ecosystem will reach Sony’s console for the first time simultaneously with other platforms.
The new trailer emphasized the dark atmosphere of the post-apocalypse. Judging by the scenes shown, the developers aim to make the game world even harsher and more hopeless than in previous installments. This approach seems like a logical continuation of the series’ ideas, which have always focused less on action and more on survival and community management in a zombie catastrophe.
It is known that Undead Labs continues to develop the concept of an open world and complex decisions. For fans of hardcore gameplay, there will still be the option to enable permadeath mode, where character loss is final. Such mechanics have always distinguished State of Decay from more traditional zombie games.
Recall that the project was announced back in 2020. Since then, development has repeatedly raised questions among players due to the long absence of major reveals. In 2024, the studio stated that it had expanded its team and intends to create the "best zombie survival simulator" in the series’ history. Judging by the return to the big stage and the appearance of a concrete release window, development has finally reached a new stage. Now, it remains to be seen whether State of Decay 3 can meet the expectations that have built up over seven years since the announcement.
