Diablo 5 Set for Spring 2029 as Combat Design Debate Emerges
Diablo 5 is scheduled for a spring 2029 release, though details about its combat system remain scarce. The announcement has drawn attention from prominent figures in the ARPG genre, including Chris Wilson, co-founder of Grinding Gear Games and one of the creators of Path of Exile.
In a video, Wilson shared cautious optimism about the news while raising several concerns. Among them is the direction of combat, which he believes has grown increasingly "arcade-like and action-oriented" since Diablo 3. Wilson expressed hope that Diablo 5 would bring back a system where outcomes are determined by the build, similar to Diablo 1 and 2, but he expects the series to keep leaning toward action.
Joe Shely, senior game director on Diablo 5, appears to have addressed the topic, though his comments may not have been a direct response. He indicated that instant-execution mechanics will remain, but that the game overall will center on planning and investment. "We are designing the game according to the core principle of ARPGs: any challenge can be overcome with the right build," Shely said.
According to the journalist, Shely's phrasing does not clarify the specifics of the combat system—instant-execution mechanics could refer to anything from basic positioning and dodging to a heavier focus on action. Still, the continued emphasis on build composition rather than player reaction is seen as encouraging.
