“Deep Water” as a mechanic is a smart solution for a climbing simulator. In the original Cairn, falling is the main source of tension and fear. Over water, this tension is relieved: the player can take risks, try difficult routes, and not fear restarting. This changes the pace of the game: from cautious, methodical climbing to a freer, more experimental approach.
A free DLC for an indie simulator shows that the developers value the community and want to expand the game rather than monetize post-release content.
