Devil May Cry HD Collection Gets Surprise Steam Update, Shrinks Size Dramatically
CAPCOM has quietly pushed out an update for Devil May Cry HD Collection on Steam, and despite the game's age, the patch delivers a substantial technical overhaul. The download weighs in at roughly 1 GB, but its impact is far larger: the collection's total install size has dropped from 11.3 GB to just 4.5 GB.
Cutscenes Swapped from WMV to WebM
The bulk of the savings comes from reworked video files. CAPCOM replaced the original FMV cutscenes in WMV format with WebM versions, cutting the size of individual videos considerably. One cutscene that previously occupied 113 MB now sits at approximately 15 MB. All told, the video conversion reclaimed around 6.8 GB of disk space.
Official Notes Keep It Vague
CAPCOM's own patch notes tell a far less interesting story. The publisher only references Windows 11 compatibility verification and "various bug fixes," offering no specifics about the video file changes. Details about the format swap surfaced through SteamDB instead.
Quality and Mod Impact
The shift to WebM doesn't automatically mean lower visual fidelity, and early comparisons by users have not turned up any obvious difference between the old and new cutscenes. That said, mods for the collection may need updates to function properly, as the underlying file structure has been altered.
What's Still Missing
One thing the update didn't bring is Steam Cloud support, which fans have been requesting for some time. Even so, years after launch, Devil May Cry HD Collection has received a modest technical refresh — and now occupies less than half the disk space it once required.
