Religion DLC for Crusader Kings III launches on September 30
Paradox Interactive says that on Sept. 30 the world of Crusader Kings III will get the expansion By God Alone. The add‑on is part of the seasonal pass Chapter V. The developers list quite a few changes — some are subtle, some will reshape how faith and power interact, and a few might spark heated debates among players.
- Playing as theocracies. Take the reins of lands controlled by archbishops — or even the pope. The Papacy gains new income streams and levers of influence, e.g., alternative sources of wealth that change how church power is wielded.
- Situation for Christianity: A new persistent situation for Christian realms unlocks actions and decisions that steer the faith's evolution; think Ecumenical Councils where dogmas get debated and set (i.e., you can affect core tenets).
- Heresies. Rituals that deviate from established norms can be branded heretical and will sap church authority and prosperity. You can submit, negotiate, or outright rebel — choices have consequences.
- The Great Schism. Starting a campaign in 867, the Christian church eventually hits a major fork in the road that can produce the Great Schism — Western Catholicism vs. Eastern Orthodoxy — altering alliances and religious identity.
- Monastic Holy Orders. Monasteries now tackle theology and scholarship; rulers hosting chapters reap tangible rewards (e.g., boosts to learning, prestige). Don’t forget that monks’ prayers can affect rulers’ standing with their faith, too.
- Changes to religious dogma. The dogma system was overhauled: emphasis shifts to characters’ attitudes toward belief and on what behaviors a faith regards as acceptable. You can push heterodox teachings or work the church system to normalize personal preferences.
- Spiritual fulfillment system. Traits, actions and religious rules combine to shape a character’s inner life. Sinful vs. virtuous deeds cause stress and change a character’s rapport w/ God and expectations about the afterlife.
- Archdioceses. A new church title offers authority across a geographic region, often functioning independently of secular landholdings.
- College of Cardinals. The pope can name cardinals across Christendom, but secular powers will still try to influence appointments — political meddling remains part of the game.
- Dynamic holy sites. Holy places aren’t fixed: confessions can lose old sites or gain new ones as the religious map shifts.
- Councils. Local councils may become focal points of veneration for saints or spiritual figures and, over time, develop into recognized holy sites.
- Puppets. Secular rulers get tools to place clergymen inside the church apparatus so the bureaucracy can act as a channel for their will.
The Chapter V expansion pack for Crusader Kings III is available on Steam for 2,679 rubles.
