Microsoft will introduce time limits for cloud streaming in game pass

XBOX has announced that, beginning in November, Game Pass cloud streaming will be subject to monthly time caps. Previously, Game Pass subscribers were able to stream games from the cloud without limits, but the company says temporary limits will now be introduced. Once a subscriber reaches their monthly allotment, any additional cloud playtime must be purchased through the XBOX Store.

The monthly allowances will vary by subscription tier:

  • Game Pass Ultimate — 15 hours.
  • Game Pass Premium — 10 hours.
  • Game Pass Essential — 5 hours.

Microsoft characterized the change as a meaningful one for users who frequently rely on cloud play, but its internal estimates indicate the caps will impact "only 4% of Game Pass subscribers." The company said further specifics — including prices, how to buy extra hours, which games will be available via cloud, and other details — will be published in November.

XBOX explained the move by pointing to rising costs: supporting cloud gaming becomes more expensive with each new user and each additional hour of gameplay, and monthly limits are intended to help maintain the service and allow continued investment in stability and quality.

As part of the November rollout, XBOX will also let customers use cloud streaming without a Game Pass subscription. Non-subscribers will be offered the option to purchase hours for cloud play in order to launch compatible titles from their own libraries on supported devices.

The announcement prompted negative reactions from parts of the community, with many questioning the claim that only 4% of subscribers will be affected and noting that users with older hardware often depend on cloud access for modern games.

"It seems to me that XBOX has completely lost touch with reality since this is only 30 minutes a day for a month at the Ultimate level", shared user Channelxp1.
