Rumor: Ubisoft has started development of a new Far Cry - the ambitious project has moved beyond the concept stage

Ubisoft has quietly shifted a new entry in the Far Cry line — codename Kodiak — out of concept and into full production at Vantage Studios.

Tom Henderson of Insider Gaming, citing his own sources, reports the project under that codename. He calls it "very ambitious." The goal, reportedly, is an FP (i.e., first-person) open-world where player choices and in-play events shape dynamic stories rather than handing everything to a scripted narrative.

Kodiak apparently reuses work from the canceled Maverick effort — that was a networked extraction shooter Ubisoft had been exploring in the Far Cry setting. After running into problems with that route, the team seems to have dropped the extraction-shooter idea and nudged the series back toward something more familiar.

That said, Kodiak is not a replacement for the next mainline entry, which goes by Blackbird. Blackbird itself hit snags and internal delays, but sources say progress has steadied. Expect multiplayer/co-op elements (e.g., several players exploring the same world) rather than a purely solo affair.

Inside Vantage, Blackbird is already treated as a flagship project. Studio head Charlie Guillemot described it as "impressive" and framed it as the opening chapter of a new concept that could spawn additional Far Cry releases — if it succeeds at launch, which, frankly, is a big if.
