Capcom claims that western players are more receptive to challenging games than japanese players

Capcom says feedback on Dragon's Dogma 2’s gameplay has split along regional lines, with players in Japan and other Asian countries responding differently than those in the West. In an interview with Automaton, producer Naoto Oyama and game director Kento Kinoshita (who previously worked on the Dark Arisen expansion) detailed how those differences shaped post‑release adjustments.

Oyama told Automaton that Western players tend to appreciate a tougher, more realistic RPG experience and often view systems that create player obstacles — the so‑called "friction" — as a positive design choice. He pointed to restrictions on fast travel as an example of a mechanic Western audiences accept because it makes travel feel riskier and more meaningful.

There is a significant difference in the perception of Dragon's Dogma 2 between players from Japan and Asia compared to players from the West.

By contrast, Oyama said many players in Japan and other Asian markets interpreted the same limitations as irritations caused by the game itself, leading Capcom to receive frequent requests for more comfortable, convenient, and accessible options.

In response, the studio introduced features after launch that preserve the original challenge while offering alternatives for players who prefer less restriction. The most prominent of these is the "Eternal Ferrystone," an item that permits unrestricted fast travel. Capcom added it to answer players who wanted an easier way to traverse Dragon's Dogma 2’s world without removing the baseline mechanics that create exploration challenges.

Oyama described the studio’s intent as trying to satisfy both groups without undermining the game’s RPG foundations.

We aimed to add new features without breaking the existing gameplay mechanics.

Kinoshita echoed that approach, saying the team sought to give players choices rather than forcing them to pick a side.

We proceeded from the idea that players need to be offered choices, not forced to take one side or the other.

Capcom believes the addition of optional systems like the Eternal Ferrystone has been well received across regions, allowing individuals to decide how they want to experience the title. The company’s handling of feedback may foreshadow how it will approach future updates and expansions. Dragon's Dogma 2: Dark Arisen is scheduled for release on October 9 for PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch 2, and PC (on Steam).
