Double Fine, the studio behind Psychonauts and Brütal Legend, has drawn criticism after adding a new stretch goal to its Amnesia Fortnight Kickstarter campaign.
Amnesia Fortnight is a recurring internal event at Double Fine in which staff pause their regular projects for two weeks to build playable prototypes; one of those prototypes is later developed into a full game. On September 19, 2026, the studio announced a stretch goal tied to the campaign: once the fundraiser reached $600, Erika Ishii — who provided the face and voice for the heroine of Ghost of Yotei — would appear in the winning project.
The pledge prompted a strong negative reaction from a portion of the gaming community, which objected to the decision because Ishii is a progressive activist. Replies under Double Fine’s official post were dominated by comments such as:
- Is this a belated April Fool's joke?
- For the first time, a stretch goal makes me want to take my money back.
- After Ghost of Yotei, no one wants to see this woman in any video games. She is horrible, and her involvement is a huge red flag for most gamers.
- How do I get my money back?
- Is this how you ask us not to give you money anymore?
- At first, I thought this was a parody account and some kind of joke. Are you guys crazy or what?
Following the wave of criticism, Double Fine closed comments on the announcement, citing harassment of the actress.
