Microsoft patents "ad credits" system for PC and console games that displays ads during natural pauses
A new patent application from Microsoft Technology Licensing outlines a system for delivering advertisements to players on PCs and consoles without cutting into active gameplay.
The proposed mechanism ties free-to-play monetization directly to gameplay flow by relying on game engine signals rather than fixed timers. Ads appear only during moments the engine identifies as natural pauses, rather than at arbitrary intervals that might interrupt a boss fight or other intense sequence.
Under the system, each play session starts with a bank of ad-free time — 30 minutes or a single level, for example. Once that reserve is nearly depleted, the advertising system presents a window containing "promoted content." The game engine then watches for a suitable break point, such as defeating a boss, the conclusion of a cutscene, finishing a quest, or a loading screen transition. When one of these moments arrives, the ad system pauses the game, displays a video or static advertisement, and grants the viewer a fresh allotment of time in the form of an "ad credit."
The patent describes the process as follows:
The content management system may receive a signal (trigger) from the interactive software application to display promoted content, based (at least in part) on the content of the application itself. The content management system may pause the user's interaction with the application based on the received signal. The content management system may receive promoted audiovisual content and display it to the user. The content management system may resume the user's interaction with the application, as well as award a "credit" (based, at least in part, on the content shown) that defers the pause of the user's interaction with the application for a certain period of time.
A strict filtering algorithm governs when ads can appear. If the game engine issues a pause signal while the player is engaged in a boss fight or a match, the ad is suppressed. Insertion of advertising only occurs when the pause signal falls within the designated "active tracking window."
Microsoft's patent application lines up with Xbox's stated intentions to bring advertising models to Xbox Cloud Gaming and free-to-play titles. The technology would most likely see use in free-to-play games on Xbox and PC, as well as in the Xbox Cloud Gaming service. Microsoft's goal in timing ads around natural pauses is to avoid disrupting gameplay, though the appearance of advertising in games is unlikely to be welcomed by players.
