Henderson: Extraction shooter for Far Cry cancelled, new series installment being developed based on it
Insider Tom Henderson reports that the extraction shooter tied to Far Cry — the one that grew out of multiplayer for Far Cry 7 — won't be released. Instead, Ubisoft has sent the work back for a redo; the studio apparently wants to repurpose what exists into something new (devs are keeping the materials, not scrapping them).
Recall the cancelled extraction shooter had the working title Maverick. It was spun off as a standalone in early 2023, and its production was restarted in 2025. The planned setting was a fictional slice of Alaska — cold, rough, and not exactly downtown-friendly.
According to Henderson, what's emerging from the wreckage of Maverick is a new entry, tentatively called Kodiak — an FPS set in an open world. The pitch leans into "player interactions and the stories people create themselves." Development sits with Vantage Studios, the division announced last fall. Concept passed in July 2026 and the project moved into full production; sources describe Kodiak as "very ambitious" and estimate it still has several yrs to go before release (so, expect a wait).
Henderson also touched on Far Cry 7, currently codenamed Blackbird inside the studio. The title had a rocky start — multiple internal delays, a few resets — but, per the report, things have finally stabilized and production is progressing. If the insider is accurate, the seventh installment will include coop play.
