John Blanche has passed away - legendary Warhammer 40,000 illustrator and art director of Fighting Fantasy
It is reported that John Blanche, long associated with the visual voice of Warhammer, has died at 76. No cause has been made public.
He wasn't merely an illustrator on a payroll; he shaped moods. As art director at Fighting Fantasy and a lead artist for Games Workshop he turned seemingly dull rulebooks into odd reliquaries of grime and ornament. His technique mixed ink, collage and paint w/ a taste for the baroque and the uncanny — you could call it a signature that felt lived-in, not polished. Hum, for anyone who grew up with those books, his pages read less like technical art and more like an eyewitness account from a messed-up cathedral.
Fans often point to a handful of images when they talk about Blanche: Emperor on the Golden Throne, Adrian Smith - 3rd Edition Space Hulk, and Knight Panther (White Dwarf 83). Those plates keep turning up in conversations, edits, and fan art — small lodestones for a particular, grim style.
It's odd to try and sum up what an artist means to a scene. This notice is just that: a pause, an acknowledgement. For many, his pictures will keep doing the work of haunting long after this moment.
