Since its launch, players have criticized Marathon for lacking depth, variety, and a coherent progression system. To address these issues, Bungie has announced changes to both the game's content and how updates will be delivered, according to a post linked by the studio.
The studio said it will move away from a rigid seasonal cadence and give teams more leeway in timing releases and refining features.
“Instead of tying major releases to strict seasonal deadlines, we are giving the team a more flexible schedule for developing, testing, and refining new features,” — the studio clarified.
Bungie also revised the roadmap for the next major patch. The update originally planned for September 22 has been postponed to December 8. That release, titled “Symbiosis,” will incorporate material from the canceled September update and bring several notable additions: a new Runner skin, the game’s first permanent PvE mode, changes to the Perimeter, and a shared social area featuring a shooting range. The patch will also introduce an experimental team deathmatch mode and upgrades to the tutorial system aimed at new players.
This update will, for the first time, add permanent PvE content to the game and offer new ways to explore, develop, and interact with the world beyond the traditional PvPvE gameplay. “Symbiosis” is an important milestone for Marathon and the beginning of a large-scale evolution that will continue until March and will rely on player feedback.

Bungie said the community will not be left without changes in the interim. On October 6 the team plans a smaller update that will reset player progress and the in-game economy, refresh rewards, and improve the current live build to prepare for the December and March content drops. The temporary event “Vault Hacker” is scheduled to return alongside that update.
The studio also promised further details through video diaries and news posts, with the first blog entry expected toward the end of September.
