Disney has tapped Chris Sanders — the franchise co-cr. — as dir. for the live-action "Lilo & Stitch" sequel, taking over from Dean Fleischer Camp (who directed the first film). Sanders isn’t a stranger to the project: he helped with the scr. and once again lent his voice to Stitch (in the original animated movie and the recent live-action).
Principal photography is set to begin this year. Plot details remain under wraps, but the studio says the sequel will follow a completely original story (no straight remakes).
The live-action return did surprisingly strong business: the film topped $1 billion worldwide, with the US accounting for $423.7 million. The sequel is due in theaters on May 26, 2028.
